This was my Halloween costume my sophomore year! I was Isabella, an undead witch, from the game AFK Arena. Originally I was going to make a full hoop skirt and corset to go under the dress, but I unfortunately ran into some time constraints. I still think I got it pretty accurate to her design though!
There are three major pieces to this costume: the horns, the overdress, and the skirt. Out of the three, I'd say I'm most proud of the horns!
To make them, I made a templates of stylized vertebrae cross sections, each one slowly decreasing in size to create the tapered effect that her horns have. I carved each vertebrae out of florist's foam, spray painted them to get even color, and fed a wire through the center of each to hold them in place. I sewed the wire onto a black headband to finish them off!
The overdress was made from a princess seam bodice pattern I already had, and I just extended it to form the points! I added puffed sleeves with a thick cuff, and appliquéd silver velvet to make the "ribcage" details.
The skirt is just a normal half circle skirt, with an invisible zipper up one side and a button closure on the waistband. I chose a half circle so it would have enough volume to be held up by the petticoat, but it wouldn't have so much volume that it would be hard to tell there was a petticoat there in the first place!
I'm super pleased with how this costume turned out! I think it captured her character well, and if anyone who also played saw me they would recognize who I was supposed to be. I think the horns turned out especially well! They really have that spikey stylized vertebrae look that I was going for.
I love this costume, even though I ran out of time to do some of the details I wanted on the overdress. The skirt is so comfortable that I wear it pretty regularly outside of the costume, and I think the horns are one of my favorite accessories that I've ever made!
