This is going to be my Halloween costume this year! I knew I wanted to do a variation upon an existing character instead of an exact replica, and with the Variant system that the Loki show set up, I thought a Loki Variant would be the perfect thing! I chose a court jester because it wasn't something I had seen done before, but I thought it fit Loki's attention-seeking habits super well. Plus I had been wanting a costume with lots of bells for a while!
I decided to prioritize having multiple, somewhat versatile pieces in this costume, which is how I decided to have a plain ruff along with the stays and dress.
I started by making the ruff, since I knew it was going to be one of the hardest parts. I followed a tutorial on YouTube from the Chicago Shakespeare Theater since I wanted to be sure my ruff would be structurally sound!
I started by sewing two strips of my white fabric together to create a four yard long piece. Then, I folded it in half and sewed my horsehair between the sides. Once that was done and I was happy with how the horsehair was secured, I marked out two rows of dots in 1.5 inch intervals along the entire length, so I would be sure to make all the pleats even. Once that was done, it was time to begin hand sewing! This step took the longest by far, since I needed to periodically gather the fabric and keep track of how condensed it was getting.
