My Sustained Investigation for this portfolio was:
I am developing character designs with an emphasis on costume concept art with a focus on using visual symbolism and color to illustrate characters from the novel Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. The novel is set in Renaissance Germany, which informs many of the details and silhouettes found within my pieces. Using key components from the plot to drive the art, I create images rich with meaning and characterizations. As well as character portraits, I created illustrations for the face cards in a standard deck, using the suits of cards found in the novel through card games ran by the main character, Vanja.
All of the pieces in this section were sketched on paper, inked on Procreate, then printed and colored with water soluble wax pastels. For Vanja Shmidt, Emeric Conrad, The Pearls, and Gisele von Falbirg, I painted the main figure and certain background elements on seperate papers before gluing them onto the background.

These pieces are all face cards for the standard deck used in Little Thieves. They were made entirely on Procreate, and I chose the colorblocked art style to make sure they read well at a small scale. Eventually they (alongside number cards) will be printed in a real card deck! The main characters of the novel are associated with certain face cards, while others are more "generic" designs.
