I made this piece for a school project! We were given free reign to make whatever we wanted, and I had been wanting to make a mask for a while, so it was the perfect opportunity! I had seen masks similar to this at Renaissance Faires before, and had been hoping for time to make my own.
To start, I made a pattern and scored it into the leather. Then, I cut the shape of the mask. I carved the "broken" pieces, but left the cracks as plain cut leather. Then I painted in the swirls. Once the paint dried, I dipped the whole thing in water and pressed it onto my face! It warped to fit me perfectly, which was a pleasant surprise since that was the first time I had tried that technique. I burnished it, then finished it with a waterproof leather conditioner.
This is definitely one of the coolest things I've done in leather! It fits me so well, and I love the contrast between the swirls and the plain leather.
I'm so proud of this! I definitely plan on making another mask like this in the future. I feel like it looks very professional!
