I don't think there was a specific inspiration for this piece, other than the desire to upcycle jeans into a skirt! I knew I wanted a high waisted silhouette, and would never wear low rise bootcut jeans, so a lot the design choices I made were based around material constraints.
I started with a pair of low rise bootcut jeans, since I knew I would never wear them as they were.
The first step was cutting open the inseam, as well as part of the rear crotch seam to create the sides of the skirt. I cut the bottom part of the leg off to get the insert panels, since I wanted the skirt to be knee length and only made of the original jeans. I decided to layer the denim to create more of a distressed look instead of piecing it together traditionally, and I chose not to hem it for the same reason!
The last step was putting a dart in the center back to contour the hips to fit mine.
This process worked super well! I'm really happy with the distressed effect, and I'm glad I only used the denim from the jeans to make these. The panels look super cohesive with the more intact parts of the jeans!
I think in the future I would work harder to make sure the skirt fit perfectly, because it ended up gaping in the front a little without a belt. Otherwise, I'm super happy with this piece! I don't think I would make another skirt like this, since I don't really get much wear out of this one, but I'm still glad I made it.
