We bought rainbow scarves to give out to my friends at school during Pride, and I knew I had to make something out of them! My main inspiration for this piece was definitely handkerchief skirts from the 1920s, I adore their geometric hems. This skirt was specifically made with the idea of wearing it Chester Country Pride in mind. Being visibly queer is something that is very important to me, and this skirt is one of my most obvious examples of that!
The first thing I did with this skirt was turning four of the scarves into a larger square! Once they were assembled, I cut a hole in the middle for the waist. The waistband is also made of one of the scarves!
Since I was going to wear this to Chester County Pride, I knew I was going to need a pocket for the free goodies they hand out at booths (and for my phone!) I had this yellow canvas left over from my Squirrel Girl utility belt, and thought the saturation was perfect to compliment this skirt. I traced around my phone with a small margin to make sure it would fit nicely. The yellow by itself seemed too plain, so I added a patch which says "Pick Flowers Not Fights", which seemed appropriate for a Pride celebration.
This skirt is absolutely stunning! I love the way it flows in the wind as I walk, and the angular hem is perfect for breathability during the summer.
There isn't anything I would have done differently about this skirt! I love everything about it, and have worn it to three consecutive Chester County Prides. It is ever so slightly too long to wear with normal shoes, but it works beautifully with my rainbow glitter platforms!
